It might help with the sense of adventure that the path seems to have changed since they last saw it? At least, Feuilly is pretty sure that they should have come to a little clearing by now, the one that looks out over the lake? And he's pretty sure that he doesn't remember this bit being so steep and winding?
The horses don't seem to mind it, though. Maybe they're glad to be stretching their legs too.
